about
“Glass Curtain” was initially inspired by an image of Steve Lacy looking through a clear beaded curtain. It gave me the idea of a glass curtain – that things can be hidden in plain sight. My sister, brother and I didn’t have an easy childhood, and this song was started as an apology to my siblings for how much pain they felt, and my own feeling of helplessness to take that hurt away. It grew into more of a call for us to come together and let go of the past and all the pain that came with it. I think when you are young, you hide realities from yourself because they are too hard to process, even unconsciously and unintentionally, and your parents often think that you don’t understand things that, deep down, you do. Then as you grow, you have to piece together this puzzle of your life as the memories come back to you. It can be so hard as those memories flood back in, especially the traumatic ones. “Glass Curtain” is ultimately about shedding the weight of the darkness of the past.
lyrics
To my sister when she’s sad,
To my brother when the world feels heavy
What a decade we have had
Broken family
I’m sorry I didn’t listen
Didn’t hold out my hand
I’m sorry I couldn’t bear it
You’re stronger than I am
Looking back,
Don’t everything seem simpler than it was
Don’t everything seem better than it was
God put up a curtain, to hide away our past
But she built it out of glass
Looking through the glass curtain
And I’m drowning as the memory floods
Looking through the glass curtain
And I’m shedding all the weight on my back
To my daughter when she’s born
To my mother when her mind goes foggy
In our lives we feel pain
Better cause you’re here
I’m sorry I’ve been a brat
Most of my life
See I feel measured by the things I’ve done
And I grew up too fast
Looking back,
Don’t everything seem simpler than it was
Don’t everything seem bigger than it was
God put up a curtain, to hide away our past,
But she built it out of glass
Looking through the glass curtain
And I’m drowning as the memory floods
Looking through the glass curtain
And I’m shedding all the weight on my back
